A Love Of Materials: The Beauty of Brass —

CUSTOM IS KING.

If you’ve been following us for a while (thank you very kindly!), you’ll know that as a design studio we spend a lot of time customizing metals, burnishing and shaping them into signature elements in each of our projects. This is because I absolutely love the richness and the feel of the right material. It is so important to walk into a room and want to reach out and touch something because it draws you in. Brass does this – and when manipulated correctly, it does this without fail.

For this project, we utilized a custom brass wall in-lay to impart that signature touch, drawing the eye around the room and emphasizing a spectacular view.

I had designed and implemented most of this long term client’s home already, but we had intently reserved her master bedroom as a more personal gift she was giving herself, saving the best for (almost) last. The beautifully subtle architecture of the room required only a gentle coaxing to bring it out – nothing brash or bombastic. I sought to highlight her direct view of the city through this architecture – emphasizing the lines that carry the eyes to an incredible skyline.

With a mutual love for Art Deco, and brass being a tell-tale material of that era, it was obvious to me that I would work it in as a signature design element. To do so, we created entirely custom brass detailing which would be in-laid in the wall. The beauty of this brass was highlighted in true Turnstyle fashion by hand-applying a patina that added personality and interest.

The right path was devised, and the correct placement was chosen so as not to detract from everything around it. Once installed, the brass detail acts as a visual map, highlighting key elements and leading the eye to good places. An indulgent detail that serves to emphasize that this is a place of refuge, but then again, indulgence should be a priority in everyone’s busy lives if you ask me.

GOOD DESIGN, STRONG DESIGN, IS A HOLISTIC ENDEAVOR.

It’s important to me that every piece in a space should play off of one another, taking care that no one element detracts from another. In my studio, I seek to emphasize that no two projects are the same, and that each space is tackled in a manner that is unique to the person or people living within it .

It’s precisely that uniqueness that is inherent to my firm and is, as a matter of fact, why I named it Turnstyle Design. To turn each style on its head, designing to the individual homeowner – interpreting the best version of them through my experienced artistic lens.
