How To Curate An Art Collection For Your Home —

If there’s one thing that has been important to me throughout my career as an interior designer, it’s incorporating art into every project. Art has the power to evoke such strong emotion and curating an art collection of your own is a process that can be both enjoyable and rewarding—but also somewhat daunting.

I’m sharing a few tips I bring all of my clients through, when we’re creating a space that represents their lifestyle and bringing in art to match.

By the end of this post, my hope is that you’ll be able to use, curate and look for art with confidence.

START WITH YOUR FAMILY

One reason why art is so often incorporated into places we love, is because it is able to surface the memories we hold dear. When the art you bring into your home has elements you loved from your childhood home or is a repurposed painting from your parents’ house, you’re creating an environment that’s stimulating through fond memories of familiar items.

HUNTING AND STROLLING

You won’t stumble upon a masterpiece on every outing, but every so often you may uncover a gem if you dedicate a few Saturday agendas to the exploration for art. These strolls can serve as great educators and a wonderful way to spend your free time.

ASK THE PROS

Sometimes you may find that asking an expert can help articulate what you would be interested in, as well as educate you on art as a whole. It’s important to have the right direction and insight when it comes to selecting a good piece. TEXTURE AND COLOR

Looking for quality in these two elements is a great way to ensure that the art you’re bringing in is top-notch. Oil paintings are usually considered the gold standard due to the durability of the paint (it’s a tougher material to manipulate). However, don’t underestimate the cleverness with which new materials are being used. Look for an artist who understands his or her material well.

PROVENANCE

It’s important to know the information behind the art you curate. That’s why looking for marks or provenance, the qualification of where the piece comes from, can help you further research the pieces you are interested in.

DELIBERATE PLACEMENT

Once you’ve settled on the perfect piece of art for your home, you want to place it in an area that will bring you the most joy. Think of where you are spending the most “you time” in your home and where your gaze is usually transfixed during that time. Think of where not only you, but also where your friends may get the most opportunity to enjoy it. Lastly, don’t forget to scale the piece right. Any piece, regardless of where it goes needs to fit proportionately with the area you are hanging it.
