CULTURAL TRANSCENDENCE

In my art as in my design, my broad understanding of cultural transcendence stems from a childhood of existing between two continents. Born in the U.S. but raised between Europe and the States with my single mother, I was quick to adapt to new surroundings and experiences out of necessity. Thus lasting connections, both emotionally and personally, are an important aspect of my work. Those connections have pushed my creative viewpoint and enabled my artistic expression through my profession as an interior designer as well as my work as an artist.

HUMAN NATURE

My art explores the intersection of a material’s capability and human expression. Materials such as brass, glass beading, and textures painted on Belgian linen stand firmly on their own but become something more when combined and manipulated. And as an unfailing optimist, I seek to create work that pushes a medium through its natural capacity, molding it, guiding it, and allowing it to interact with other elements. Materials to me are a perfect representation of all adaptability. A reflection of one’s ability to cope, adjust and work well with others, to find a true identity.

I use this approach to a take a viewer back to the basics of joy; the core pleasure of being with our own materiality; our nature of being human. I seek to evoke contemplation of the tactile materials around us and what they represent within ourselves. The result is a diversity of pieces that causes one to engage and linger, making an emotional connection with the material-play as a whole.

COMMISSION PIECES

My visual art has always been an extension of my work as an interior designer. The opportunity to come into a space, to get to know a person and to create a piece that truly speaks to their story is such a rewarding, inspiring experience. When I create a commissioned piece, my aim is always to distill what is uniquely evocative of the person. To create something that is made with intention, and which will resonate with them on a level beyond sheer ornamentation.

If you’d like to open a dialogue about a potential commission partnership, either for yourself or as a gift for another, give me a call, I’d love to hear from you.
