Shine Like A Diamond —

CRUSHING ON CABINET HARDWARE

So when it comes to finishing up a space, as you can imagine, there are lots of details one needs to put attention to. The old adage: the details are everything, are truly…everything. This brings me to one of my favorite topics: cabinet hardware. When it comes to kitchens, baths – oh really, even the built ins which we design often – this finishing touch is what crosses your t’s and dots the i’s.

FOR YOUR NEXT PROJECT, THINK OF THEM AS JEWELRY.

Just as you wouldn’t leave the house without the last detail of an earring, a necklace, or a fabulous cuff for a big night out, your furniture can find new life in this simple but highly effective detail. Available in every, and I mean every, shape and size, in the first instance, think how the piece feels. When selecting hardware, buy a sample. Hold it in your hands and even attach it to a sample door to feel where the curves or angles hit your palm. Are they comfortable or are they in the way? Are they easy to grab or does one falter? Cabinet hardware should feel natural to the hand and weigh, somewhat heavy, to feel the material’s quality. Knobs and handles are the luxury finish on any piece, so you want them to feel as such.

Next consider scale. Are your knobs too large for the cabinet detail you’ve chosen? Do they “fall off the edge”? Do they cover anything you’ve just added cabinet-detail-wise? Once you have figured out fit and scale you can move to aesthetics. As always, for these little moments head out of your comfort zone and go big. Big in the sense of color, pattern, or finish option. Handles and knobs are easy to change, so you can splurge with your boldness and go with the seasons so to speak. These finishes are important to finalizing beautiful built-ins.
