As a homeowner, it can feel daunting when choosing a designer to work with for the first time. Because you are likely filled with an abundance of questions, we at Turnstyle Design wanted to offer a bit of helpful design info to you, as you begin the selection process. Here are some helpful design tips, to get you started as you begin to think about your next project.

INSIST ON LONG-TERM

Regardless of which professional you choose to work with, when it comes to your home, it’s important to ensure you feel you’ll realize true long-term value out of your investment. You should deem that any professional you are considering, shares this long-term view AND proposes a strong plan to help you really achieve this. For Turnstyle Design, any space we tackle, keeps this notion front and center. A space we implement, need to be functional and well-thought out for now, but also show it can carry an aesthetic and a functionality that lends itself to future needs.

For example, with the space pictured above, we were tasked with combining a reading and play space with a desk for dad. Because this will mean that their toddlers will become elementary children before you know it, we designed this space to safeguard it could withstand many new needs as the children continue to grow.

GET THE PERFECT FIT WITH SOMETHING CUSTOM.

By custom-designing each piece to accommodate for height, we open up space and plenty of flexibility. These benches are great for relaxing with a read at any age, but they also allow for dad to stretch out with his child, and readies the children as they continue to grow, adjusting to them size-wise. And because surface space is more important as you head toward elementary, these benches can double up as low tables, for early childhood projects. Clearly demarcated storage, ensures kids know where everything can be found, while movable shelves ensure changing toy sizes over the years will be easy. Books are fully on display so that they can continue to be swapped out and adapted, and open floor space allows for pretend play while keeping dad’s desk (as pictured below) free and clear of kiddo clutter.

Last, but certainly not least, the aesthetic in this space is future-proof. With our projects, we aim to expertly encourage imagination and playfulness, while implementing a design that will remain classic and appealing as kids grow. Equally, we also want to appeal to dad at his desk and the home’s look and feel as a whole. This is always important to ensure that any space in a home is harmonized with all others and doesn’t feel in any way detached. With the color palette and pattern play we’ve designed here, we’ve created a welcoming and soothing place for many years to come.

DESIGN FOR YOUR FAMILY’S LIFESTYLE

As a young family, this client of ours wanted to ensure their three children felt like they could use all space – in other words – they wanted make sure nothing felt too precious. Of course, at the same time, adults wish to feel like they have more mature spaces as well, so that they can also entertain and relax the way they wish to.

To make certain of this, we at Turnstyle Design, consider playfulness and approachability in each project as paramount. We select colors, fabrics and textures that are easy to use, function at the highest levels of use and ensure that they feel luxe and high quality for any adult’s palette. We incorporate strong personal moments, interpreting something important to the family, such as this mural we hand-painted and custom-designed in the background. It was from a mention to us, that we took to the next step and developed an aesthetic around this moment to make family dinner great fun.

The living room here, has soft and ready-to-touch fabrics to keep both adults and their guests comfortable, but with all as performance fabrics, homeowners won’t have to stress over a child’s use of the space at any given time.

Playful pillows and furnishings in a lively color context, mimic the vibrancy of this young family, ensuring they always feel right at home and inspired for the next day ahead.

GO WITH A SIGNATURE LOOK THAT BECOMES YOUR OWN

As your designer, we are here to ensure your home feels like you – not necessarily like a designer came through to stamp it with a formula. This is why we spend so much time ensuring we understand your family’s dynamic. Because no two of our projects are ever the same, we listen to recognize and help you define what you might not be able to articulate on your own. Namely, that’s precisely why you’ve decided to hire a designer.

FOCUS ON WHAT YOU LOVE.

For this master bath, we gutted this 1970s space, to completely redesign and remodel it. The homeowner, a young couple, felt the original space was cramped, inefficient, lacking of storage and overall plainly not great in terms of its feeling to be in. But, because they fell in love with this mid-seventies house for a reason, we brought out the good parts of the era, to be true to the home and its architecture, with this classic Schumacher wallpaper. Pulling colors which would only highlight and delicately reference something classically retro, all while modernizing and expanding space in this bathroom.

DON’T BE AFRAID OF UPGRADES.

A brand new glass walled walk-in shower, now provides lots of space and streamlining. With double shower sprays, it can immediately feel like a spa. A large custom-built double sink vanity, allows for lots of counter space and storage underneath, with plenty of towel hanging opportunities. An additional furniture piece, not only gives further storage, but softens this bathroom into feeling less like a cramped space, and more like a thoughtful part of their home.
